Pain Conditions Treated With Regenerative Medicine

Chronic pain lasts for more than three months and outlasts the typical, expected healing time. Approximately 100 million people in the United States suffer from chronic pain conditions that can range from mild to excruciating and can be simply inconvenient or completely incapacitating. Chronic pain not only results in physical disability, but long-term can result in significant psychological and emotional suffering that can limit an individual’s ability to function fully.

Symptoms will vary patient to patient, but may include:

  • Shooting or burning pain
  • Spasms
  • Radiating pain
  • Tingling
  • Aching
  • General soreness
  • Tightness, or stiffness
  • Weakness
  • Discomfort
  • Increased stress
  • Depression / Anxiety
  • Fatigue

Pain is thought to be an indicator of tissue damage or an underlying injury. A number of existing treatments can help a patient cope with chronic pain, but don’t fully address the underlying damage or injury. New regenerative medicine therapies can target the underlying problem and promote the body’s natural healing processes. Patients who experience the following list of conditions may be viable candidates for regenerative medicine.

Regenerative Medical Pain Management Solutions:

Trigger Point Injection Therapy

Trigger point injection is a procedure used to treat painful areas of muscle that contain trigger points, or knots of muscle that form when muscles do not relax. During this procedure, our team will use a small needle, to inject a natural muscle relaxer into the trigger point. With the injection, the trigger point is made inactive and the pain is alleviated. Usually, a brief course of treatment will result in sustained relief.

Trigger point injection is used to treat muscle pain in the arms, legs, lower back, and neck. In addition, this approach has been used to treat fibromyalgia, tension headaches, and myofascial pain syndrome (chronic pain involving tissue that surrounds muscle) that does not respond to other treatment.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy was first introduced in the 1970s and has been used in many medicine specialties including orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, sports medicine, wound care and pain management since the 1990s. PRP therapy involves the injection of concentrated platelets, autologous growth factors and secretory proteins into the region of interest. The platelets are injected and immediately start to communicate with your body, initiating your body’s natural wound healing response to the specific injection area site. PRP concentrates those cells involved in wound healing and puts them into the area. Usually only one or two injections are needed. PRP has been used for numerous conditions. In interventional pain management, it is commonly used for acute and chronic conditions such as tendonopathy, tendonosis, muscle strain, muscle fibrosis, ligamentous injury, arthritis, arthofibrosis, articular cartilage defects, meniscal injury and chronic synovitis or joint inflammation.

Stem Cells

Stem cells are the construction workers of the body’s repair mechanism. The primary role of stem cells is to maintain and initiate the healing of damaged tissue and replenish dying or damaged cells. Stem cells find the damaged tissue and have the potential to initiate its repair or regeneration. Stem cell therapy, also referred to as stem cell treatment or cell therapy, helps the body repair itself naturally. The cells neutralize inflammation and accelerate healing. They have the potential to regenerate injured cartilage tissue, tendons, bone, muscle, ligaments and vertebral annular disc cartilage.

To regenerate your body, stem cells find the damaged tissue and have the potential to initiate its repair or regeneration. The cells can stimulate your body’s own natural healing processes. This technique begins by harvesting a patient’s own stem cells found in both adipose (fat) tissue and bone marrow, concentrating the cells into a small injectable volume, and then reintroducing the cells into the area of concern. This process is backed by research and stimulates the body to repair and replace tissue that has broken down over time or has been traumatized from injury or overuse.

Biostimulation Therapeutic Modalities

At Live Longer Medical, we may recommend the use of a variety of in office or at home therapies to include ultrasound, light therapy, laser therapy, electric stimulation or stretching. Depending on your clinical findings, we may refer you to a local physical therapy provider to aid in your overall care plan.

It is readily accepted that PRP and Stem Cell therapies can regenerate ligament and facilitate muscle & tendon healing. Cartilage restoration is a bit more controversial. Most physicians that perform regenerative medicine treatments however agree that when stem cells are employed the clinical response looks very much like new cartilage was laid down.  With the exception of select cancer and wound or peripheral vascular conditions while there have been exciting reports of stem cell treatments resulting in miraculous responses in a wide range of medical conditions for the most part these other indications are not yet readily accepted by the medical community. Our office has published in the past on reversal of peripheral vascular disease when nutritional support (Juice Plus) is combined with medications such as Plavix and Pletal.   We have seen excellent responses in wound and peripheral vascular cases using PRP or Stem Cell this approach in our opinion they are still not the mainstay of treatment and experience remains anecdotal.

Reducing total load means doing whatever is necessary to put the body back onto a healing path. In an effort to maximize outcomes we like to help you and your body do whatever is necessary to facilitate the best outcome.  That means looking at all the factors that affect wellness and doing whatever else is necessary too support your musculoskeletal system and the joint or tissue we are trying to treat. Some patients may even benefit from treatment with hormone replacement therapy, infectious and immunological approaches, or addressing mind body spirit challenges. We try to be open minded in our approach and provide only those treatments that make sense for you.  Whether you suffer from sprained, strained or partially torn muscle, tendon, ligament, or have joint space narrowing associated with osteoarthritis, regenerative medicine offers new treatment options for restoring quality of life.
